How We Cut Our Broadband and Phone Bills at Contract End

Last spring we added up what the two of us paid each month to stay connected: 46 pounds for broadband, 38 pounds for my phone and 31 pounds for my partner's. That was 115 pounds a month, and both handsets had been paid off for over a year.

Last spring we added up what the two of us paid each month to stay connected: 46 pounds for broadband, 38 pounds for my phone and 31 pounds for my partner's. That was 115 pounds a month, and both handsets had been paid off for over a year. We were still paying the full contract price for phones we already owned. One evening and two phone calls later, the total was 45 pounds.

This is how we cut our broadband and phone bills, with the exact steps, the scripts we used on the phone and the numbers before and after. None of it needs a spreadsheet, and the whole thing took about three hours spread over a week.

Find Your Contract End Dates First

Everything depends on knowing when each contract ends. Leaving early usually means paying the remaining months, which wipes out any saving. Leaving the day it ends costs nothing.

In the UK, providers must send an end-of-contract notice between 10 and 40 days before the minimum term finishes, showing what you pay now and their best deal for you. We had both deleted ours unread. If you cannot find yours, log in to the provider's app or text your mobile network; most show the end date on the account page.

We wrote all three dates on the same note we use for the subscriptions we forgot we pay for, with a reminder set five weeks before each one.

Phones Paid Off Are the Easiest Win

A phone contract bundles two things: the handset loan and the airtime. Once the minimum term ends, the handset is yours, yet many networks keep charging the same monthly amount until you act. Ours had for 14 months, which cost us roughly 400 pounds between us.

Here is what we compared:

LineBeforeAfterWhat changed
My phone38 pounds8 poundsSIM-only, 30 GB, rolling monthly
My partner's phone31 pounds10 poundsSIM-only, 60 GB, 12 months
Broadband46 pounds27 poundsRe-contracted, slower package
Total115 pounds45 pounds70 pounds a month saved

To move a mobile number, text PAC to 65075 from the phone and you receive a code by text within a minute. Give that code to the new network and your number moves, usually the next working day. If you do not mind a new number, text STAC to 75075 instead.

The hardest part was resisting the upgrade offer. When I called to ask for my code, the network offered a new handset for 42 pounds a month. My phone was three years old and worked fine, so I said no. Keeping a working phone for one more year on an 8 pound SIM saves more than 400 pounds compared with that upgrade.

How We Cut Our Broadband and Phone Bills by Haggling

For broadband, we rang our existing provider before looking anywhere else, and that was deliberate. A retention team can often match a new-customer price without the hassle of an engineer visit or a new router.

What actually worked on the call:

  1. Have one real competitor price ready. We had a 28 pound offer from another provider for the same street.
  2. Say plainly that the contract ends on a given date and you plan to leave. Ask for the cancellations or retentions team.
  3. Quote the competitor price, then stop talking.
  4. If the first offer is weak, say you will think about it and call back. The second agent is often more flexible.

Our first offer was 36 pounds. The second call, two days later, got 27 pounds on an 18 month term. Total time on hold: about 40 minutes.

You Probably Do Not Need the Fastest Package

Most comparison sites push you towards full fibre at 500 or 900 Mbps. We had been paying for 500. Then we checked what we actually use: two laptops on video calls during the working week, one streaming service in the evening, phones on Wi-Fi.

A 4K stream needs around 15 to 25 Mbps. A video call uses 3 to 4. Even with both of us on calls and a film playing, we sit well under 70 Mbps. We dropped to a 150 Mbps package and have not noticed any difference. If you work from home in the same flat, as we do, the bigger issue is usually Wi-Fi coverage in the second room, not the line speed. A 30 pound mesh point fixed that for us better than a faster package ever did.

Check for a Social Tariff

If either of you receives Universal Credit, Pension Credit or certain other benefits, you may qualify for a social tariff. These are cheaper broadband or mobile plans offered by most large providers, typically 12 to 20 pounds a month for broadband, often with no exit fee. Ofcom has reported that only a small share of eligible households use one. It takes one phone call to ask, and providers do not usually volunteer the offer.

Watch the Mid-Contract Price Rise

Most UK contracts include a yearly price rise, usually in April. Since 2025, providers have to show that rise in pounds and pence when you sign, rather than as inflation plus a percentage. Before agreeing to a new deal, ask what the price will be in month 13 and month 19. Our 27 pound broadband rises by 3 pounds next April, which we built into the budget from the start.

A rolling monthly SIM can rise too, but you can leave with 30 days' notice, which keeps the network honest.

Splitting the New Bills Between Us

Saving 70 pounds a month is only useful if it ends up somewhere on purpose. We moved the broadband to our joint bills account and kept phones personal, so each of us owns our own plan. The saving now goes into the weekend trips pot. If you share costs differently, our approach to splitting shared bills without keeping score works with any mix of joint and personal accounts.

FAQ

Will switching broadband leave us offline?

Usually not for long. Most switches are now managed by the new provider, and the changeover typically happens on a set date with a gap of a few hours at most. Keep phone data as a backup on the day.

Is SIM-only coverage worse than a big network contract?

Many SIM-only brands run on the same masts as the major networks. Check which network your chosen brand uses and look at its coverage map for your postcode and workplace.

Can we leave a contract early if the price rise is too high?

Only if the rise was not set out in the contract terms. If it was clearly stated when you signed, you are usually tied in until the term ends.

What We Would Do Again

Write down three end dates tonight, set reminders five weeks ahead, and make the first call to your current broadband provider with a competitor price in hand. Then move paid-off phones to SIM-only. More ways we keep costs down as a couple are in our budget living notes.
