Working From Home Together in a Small Flat Without Clashing

Our flat is 48 square metres. For the first three months that we both worked from home, one of us was on video calls at the kitchen table while the other typed on the sofa with a laptop balanced on a cushion.

Two laptops set up at a kitchen table and a small bedroom desk in a compact flat

Our flat is 48 square metres. For the first three months that we both worked from home, one of us was on video calls at the kitchen table while the other typed on the sofa with a laptop balanced on a cushion. By Thursday each week we were snapping at each other over who got the table and whose call was louder.

Working from home together in a small flat is not really a furniture problem. It is a problem of sound, light, timing and a few unspoken rules. Here is what we changed, what it cost, and the advice we tried and dropped.

Map Your Days Before You Move Any Furniture

The first thing that helped cost nothing. For one week we each wrote down when we had calls, when we needed deep focus and when we were doing light admin. Then we laid the two schedules side by side.

The result surprised us. Our calls overlapped only on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, roughly six hours a week. The rest of the time one of us could easily work in a shared space. We had been planning our whole setup around the worst two mornings instead of the typical day.

If you do this, mark three things for each hour: on camera, needs quiet, or flexible. It turns a vague argument into a timetable you can actually plan around.

Working From Home Together Means Two Zones, Not Two Offices

You probably do not have a spare room, so stop looking for one. What you need is two places where each person can work for a full day without the other walking through their camera frame.

In our flat that ended up as:

  • Zone one: the kitchen table, which became the main desk for whoever had the most calls that day.
  • Zone two: a 100 centimetre wide desk in the corner of the bedroom, facing the wall, with a plain background behind the chair.

The bedroom desk was the bigger decision. Plenty of people warn against working where you sleep. We tried a sofa setup instead for a month and both developed sore backs. A small desk and a proper chair in the bedroom, cleared away every evening, worked far better. We freed up the space by rethinking our wardrobe, the same way we describe in our guide to one bedroom flat storage for two people.

Sound Is the Real Problem

Two people on separate calls in a small flat will hear each other. Hard floors, bare walls and an open kitchen make it worse. What actually reduced the noise for us:

  1. A headset with a boom microphone for each of us, around 40 to 60 pounds. Laptop microphones pick up everything in the room. A close microphone picks up mostly you.
  2. A thick rug in the living area. Ours was 35 pounds second hand and cut the echo noticeably.
  3. Closing the bedroom door during overlapping calls, with the door frame draught strip doubling as a small sound seal.
  4. Curtains rather than blinds in the room with the second desk.

We skipped acoustic foam panels. They look odd in a home, and in a small room soft furnishings do most of the same job.

Light, Heat and the Small Comforts

A flat that is comfortable for evenings is often wrong for eight hours of work. The person facing a wall gets no daylight. The person by the window gets glare on the screen by mid afternoon.

We added a 25 pound desk lamp with a warm bulb for the bedroom desk and moved the kitchen table so the window sat to the side rather than behind the screen. That one change made video calls look far better as well.

Heating matters too. Two people at home all day means the heating runs during hours it used to be off. Rather than heat the whole flat, we heat the two rooms in use and keep the doors shut. A thermostatic valve set to 19 degrees in each working room kept our bill rise to around 20 pounds a month.

Why Strict Separate Rooms Did Not Work for Us

The common advice for couples working from home is to separate completely, with different rooms, closed doors and no talking until the end of the day. We tried this for two weeks.

It felt lonely and slightly ridiculous in a flat this size. We could hear each other anyway. Worse, small questions piled up into a long, irritable conversation at six o'clock.

What worked better was a light version. We share the space when neither of us is on a call. We keep a simple signal, headphones on means do not talk, for the hours one of us needs focus. And we take one shared break at lunch, away from both desks, even if it is only twenty minutes.

A Few House Rules That Keep the Peace

We wrote these down after an argument about the kettle, which tells you how small the triggers can be.

  • The person with the most calls that day gets first pick of desk.
  • No vacuuming, washing machine or blender during the other person's scheduled calls.
  • Shared calendar for calls, updated by nine each morning.
  • Kitchen table cleared of work by seven so it can be a dinner table again.
  • One evening a week we talk about how the arrangement is going, which we fold into the weekly check in we already use for chores.

The last rule matters most. Small irritations are easy to fix on a Sunday and hard to fix in the middle of a Tuesday call.

What It Cost in Total

We spent about 310 pounds over two months. The desk and chair were the largest item at 160 pounds, both second hand. Headsets came to 100 pounds for the pair, the rug and lamp roughly 60. Compared with the cost of a desk at a co-working space, even two days a week, that paid for itself in under a month.

FAQ

Is it bad to work from a desk in the bedroom?

It can blur work and rest, but a small desk facing the wall and cleared each evening keeps the line clear enough for most people. A sore back from the sofa is usually the worse option.

How do we handle two video calls at the same time?

Put the two speakers in different rooms with a door between them, use headsets with close microphones and keep the call volume moderate. Most of the time colleagues will not notice.

What if one of us works from home and the other does not?

The person at home should still get a defined zone that is not packed away every evening, if space allows. It stops the work from spreading across the whole flat.

Where to Start This Week

Spend one week writing down your calls and focus hours, then set up two zones around the overlap rather than the whole week. Buy headsets before furniture, and agree on a handful of house rules out loud. For more ideas on making a small place work, see our home notes.
