The first week in our current flat, we learned that the man upstairs goes for a run at 5.40 every morning, that the couple next door watch crime dramas with the volume at about 30, and that the front door of the building slams hard enough to rattle our hallway mirror. None of this was in the listing.

Cutting neighbour noise in a rented flat is a different job from soundproofing a house you own. You cannot open up walls, add a second layer of plasterboard or replace windows without the landlord's say, and you probably do not want to spend money you will leave behind in eighteen months. So we treated it as a budget project for two: what can we do for under 150 pounds, all of it removable, that actually changes how the flat sounds at night?

Find Out Where Neighbour Noise in a Rented Flat Gets In

Before buying anything, spend one evening listening. Sound travels in two ways, and the fixes are completely different.

  • Airborne noise, such as voices, television and music, travels through air and slips through any gap. A 3 millimetre gap under a door lets through far more sound than the door itself.
  • Impact noise, such as footsteps, dropped objects and slammed doors, travels through the structure. It arrives through the ceiling and floor, and no amount of foam on your side will stop it.

Walk around with the lights off and note where each sound seems loudest. In our flat the television noise came mostly through the gap around the bedroom door and an old wall vent, not the party wall itself. That single discovery saved us from buying acoustic panels we did not need.

Seal the Gaps First, Because That Is Where the Sound Leaks

This is the cheapest and most effective step, and it overlaps neatly with the draught proofing we did when keeping our small flat warm through winter. The same strips that stop cold air stop sound.

  1. Self-adhesive door seals around the frame, about 8 to 12 pounds per door. Choose rubber P or D profile over foam, which flattens within months.
  2. A brush or rubber door sweep for the gap at the bottom, around 10 pounds. Stick-on versions come off cleanly when you move out.
  3. Removable acoustic sealant or frame tape for gaps around window frames, under 10 pounds.
  4. Foam plugs for unused wall vents, but only for vents that are not needed for ventilation. Never block a vent in a room with a gas appliance, and check with the landlord first.

For roughly 40 pounds, our bedroom went from hearing every word of next door's dramas to hearing a vague murmur.

Why Egg Box Foam Is Mostly Wasted Money

The most common advice online is to stick acoustic foam tiles on the noisy wall. We tried a pack of twelve for 25 pounds and took them down a week later. Foam tiles absorb echo inside a room, which is why podcasters use them, but they do almost nothing to block sound coming through a wall. Blocking sound needs mass and sealed gaps, not soft texture.

They also tend to leave adhesive marks that can cost part of a deposit. If you want something on the shared wall, use something heavy and useful instead, which brings us to furniture.

Put Heavy Furniture to Work on the Shared Wall

A full bookcase is one of the best sound buffers a renter can add. Books are dense and uneven, so they block some sound and scatter the rest. When we reorganised our storage, as we described in our one bedroom storage plan for two, we moved the tall shelving unit from the hallway to the bedroom party wall. It made a noticeable difference to the television noise.

Other moves that cost nothing:

  • Put the bed against an internal wall rather than the shared one.
  • Hang a heavy wardrobe or wall of coats on the shared side of the hallway.
  • Leave a 2 to 3 centimetre gap between furniture and the wall so the furniture does not pass vibration straight through.

Soften Footsteps From Above, and Your Own Below

Impact noise from upstairs is the hardest problem in any flat, because the fix belongs on their floor, not your ceiling. What you can do is reduce how much your rooms amplify it. Bare walls and hard floors make every thud ring.

A thick rug with a felt underlay, around 40 to 60 pounds for a bedroom size, plus heavy lined curtains made our bedroom sound less like an echo chamber. It also made us better neighbours to the people below, which matters more than it sounds. A polite conversation goes better when you have already done your part.

Many tenancy agreements for flats include a clause requiring rugs over a percentage of hard floors, often 70 or 80 percent. It is worth checking yours, and worth mentioning politely if the upstairs flat has bare floorboards.

Talk to the Neighbour Before Anyone Else

Most noise is not deliberate. Our 5.40 runner had no idea his trainers sounded like a drum through our ceiling. A short friendly note or a knock at a reasonable hour, with a specific ask such as "could you put your shoes on by the door rather than in the bedroom," solved half of it within a week.

If that fails and the noise is regular and late, keep a simple log with dates, times and what you heard. Then contact the landlord or letting agent, who may have a clause in both tenancies covering quiet hours. Local councils can investigate statutory noise nuisance, but that route is slow and best kept for serious, repeated problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a white noise machine help with neighbour noise?

It helps with airborne noise like voices and distant traffic by masking it, and many people sleep better with one. It does little for low bass or heavy footsteps. A fan or a free app on an old phone is a good way to test before buying.

Can I ask my landlord to soundproof the flat?

You can ask, and some landlords will fit better door seals or replace a hollow internal door. Larger work such as wall insulation is their decision. Put the request in writing and explain the specific problem.

Do soundproof curtains actually work?

Heavy lined curtains reduce echo and soften some outside noise from windows. They will not stop sound through a wall. Treat them as part of a wider plan, not a single fix.

Our 150 Pound Plan in One Paragraph

Spend an evening finding where the noise gets in. Seal every door and window gap first for about 40 pounds, move a full bookcase onto the shared wall for free, add a thick rug and underlay for around 60 pounds, and keep 20 pounds back for earplugs or a white noise app. Then have the friendly conversation. Done in that order, the flat gets quieter for most couples without losing a penny of the deposit.
